Queensland Youth Music Awards Congratulations!

Three of our College Choirs took up the challenge to represent OC at the recent QYMA festival.
Last Monday evening our OC Singers performed admirably in their Primary school section receiving a Silver award and glowing comments from the adjudicator. Our new secondary College choir – the OC Chorale made their debut performance on Tuesday evening at the Gap State High School where they mesmerised the adjudicator and took out a Gold award and last night, the Pochino Choir were stunning in their performance receiving a Gold Award and Second Place overall with a $100 prize.
Congratulations to all the students for their beautiful work, to the conductors (Maree Hall and Emma Dron) and accompanists (Claire Brennan, Heather Kim and Linda Muller) for all their care and guidance and to all the parents for their on-going support and encouragement.

Just a reminder, if you have a child enrolled in private tuition in the College, the enrolment agreement requires that they also contribute to a college co-curricular music ensemble. Singing in a College choir is a prefect way for piano and vocal students to fulfil that obligation while also further developing their musicianship and having a great time. You can register your child and find out more about rehearsal times and concert events by visiting the Ensemble section of the Music Department website.

International Arts Education Week and Big Band at Twilight Makers Markets

May 22-26 marked International Arts Education week and Ormiston celebrated in a number of ways. On Monday the 22nd the Big Band took to the rotunda to provide a lunchtime performance while the OC Singers performed in the JAC theatre and Mr Taggart ran some ipad fun activities. On Tuesday we heard OC Chorale and Kinder chorus perform in the Drama space at lunch. Wednesday saw the Visual Art department install an outdoor interactive display with the theme of Sustainable Fishing, while Mr Campbell ran some drama games outside the Lingo Lin Theatre. On Thursday members of the senior school music program ventured over to the Junior School for an impromptu outdoor concert for the younger students. Friday saw the Junior Visual Art department take to the outdoors for some fun and games while flautists roamed the grounds like travelling minstrels and the Senior School gathered for an open mic type concert event in front of the Lingo Lin Theatre. Throughout the week the lunch bells were replaced by music to add to the festive atmosphere on campus.

The week culminated in a public performance of our wonderful College Big Band at the Twilight Makers Market at the Raby Bay Harbour on the Saturday evening. Under the direction of Mrs Victoria Taylor, the group entertained visitors as the sun was setting, creating a lovely, communal atmosphere.

Thank you to all the staff and students for their efforts over this very busy week. International Arts Education Week reminds us all of the importance and value of the Arts in our lives.
